GET A GRIP

Wednesday 24th March

Ok, so I have to start by mentioning the Chuck Ragan show again. To be honest, I will probably refer to it in one way or another for a long time to come! At the show I finally met Kay Stanley from GET A GRIP, a screenprinting studio based in Birmingham, who I have been 'Business Penpals' with since October '09.

In the almost six months of emails and facebook chats while we should have been working, we have shared many experiences about our business' and Kay has really been a great help in giving me ideas and help with No Guts No Glory. I'm pretty new to the often stressful world of being my own boss, and although Kay has GET A GRIP (click here) to co-run with Sam, she has always found the time to give me any advice she can.

We soon found that although we had never met we had many mutual friends, and both knew a lot of like minded people who shared a D.I.Y attitude in the sense of devoting as much time as possible, either as a job, or outside of work, doing something that they feel passionately about.

After introducing each other to a load of new blogs, bands, collectives and artists, we came up with the idea of creating our own Zine, 'The D.I.Y Times'. The Zine will be all about sharing our experiences as well as the experiences of other small self-employed business', bands, artists, people who spend their money and time putting on shows and events in their local areas etc. Myself and Kay think its really important that people continue do to things that they are passionate about, not for profit, but simply because they enjoy doing it.

Back to the Chuck Ragan show, me and Kay decided to do a GAG/NGNG tee swap. Sorry for the rubbish photo, blame Rory Matthews for that.
